Game 1 of the Fall Classic featured the Houston Astros taking on the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night. The Phillies recovered to defeat the Astros 6-5 in 10 innings after the Astros ran out to a 5-0 lead in the third inning.
The Astros, who won it all in 2017 but fell to the Atlanta Braves the previous year, are playing in their fourth World Series in six years. They entered as the favourite since they had the second-most wins in baseball (106), at the end of the regular season. They also won the American League pennant by sweeping the New York Yankees and Seattle Mariners in the playoffs.
The Phillies, a National League wild card team who finished third in their division this season with a record of 87-75, are playing the underdog. They were the sixth seed when the National League playoffs began, but they defeated the St. Louis Cardinals, the reigning champion Braves, and finally the San Diego Padres.
