Tuesday marks the release of two Hindi movies during Diwali. Given its ties to the Ramayan and massive scope, Akshay Kumar’s Ram Setu has received more positive press. The movie is predicted to outperform Thank God, starring Ajay Devgn and Sidharth Malhotra. But its box office performance won’t come close to that of Sooryavanshi, the other Akshay-starring Diwali success from the previous year. According to trade insiders, the movie may just about succeed in grossing more than half of what Sooryavanshi did on its opening day.
Jacqueline Fernandez, Nushratt Bharuccha, and other actors appear in Maneesh Sharma’s Ram Setu. The mythological Ram Setu (Adam’s Bridge) referenced in the Ramayana serves as the backdrop for the action-adventure movie. The timing of the film is intended to appeal to the general public given that Diwali is observed to celebrate Lord Rama’s return to Ayodhya within the same epic.
By Monday night, 1.7 crore had been reserved in advance for Ram Setu’s first day, according to trading tracker Sacnilk. By the time advance reservations end later on Monday night, the amount is anticipated to be close to two crore rupees. The movie is anticipated to bring in between $12 and $14 crore in net domestic box office receipts on day one, according to trade sources. If it receives favourable reviews and gains positive word-of-mouth, the amount could reach as high as 16–17 crore. The amount exceeds the $10–$12 crore that Thank God is expected to earn on Tuesday.
However, the quantity is very low as compared to Diwali releases. The Rohit Shetty actioner Sooryavanshi, which stars Akshay, earned 26.5 crore at the box office last year. To make half of that, Ram Setu would need to perform well. Anything greater would indicate that the movie did well. However, that number may indicate that it will end up being one of the best openers for a Hindi film this year given the slow season for Bollywood films in 2022. Ram Setu has a five-day extended weekend, so positive word-of-mouth can help the movie have a strong opening weekend and go on track for a respectable lifetime total. However, a lot of that will rely on what and how the audience receives it.
