A FMI meteorologist named Eerik Saarikalle told STT on Tuesday that the rain and sleet brought on by warming temperatures are what’s to blame for the slick conditions. Rain that falls on snow that has been tamped down can also make pedestrian roads treacherous.
However, a dip in temperature is anticipated right before Christmas. The temperature is anticipated to drop below zero in Southern Finland as well, increasing the likelihood of snow.
The situation is intriguing on the night of Christmas, said Saarikalle. “A low-pressure system that could bring various types of rain is likely travelling in such a way that it only just barely touches southern regions of the nation. Right now, it appears that [the showers] will be fairly snowy.
On Friday, 5–10 centimetres of additional snow are possible in several parts of Southern Finland. However, Saarikalle emphasised that there is still some uncertainty surrounding the rain’s trajectory, making it possible that there won’t be any snow in Southwest Finland for Christmas.
“There may not be any snow if Southwest Finland is hit by Christmas Eve’s blizzard. However, I do believe it’s likely that it will snow during Christmastime across the nation, especially in the southwest.
Christmas Eve should be clear and between -2°C and -10°C in Finland’s southern and western regions, with temperatures perhaps falling below -10°C in the country’s centre and northern regions.
