
During their CES 2023 address, AMD revealed new 65W Ryzen 7000 processors to their Ryzen 7000 family. The three new SKUs released are the Ryzen 9 7900, Ryzen 7 7700, and Ryzen 5 7600. The inclusion comes roughly three months after the first launch and coincides with the introduction of more affordable chipsets, which have also recently entered the market. Building an AM5 PC was significantly more expensive because the options were limited to X670 versions and the boards based on those high-end chipsets. That is no longer the case, as we now have cheaper CPUs and motherboards. Given that the new Zen 4 processors are manufactured on the TSMC 5nm technology,We’ll now see how efficient the architecture is at lower power levels.
SPECIFICATIONS
We haven’t yet received the 7900X, which is the 170W edition of the processor we’re looking at. As a result, we can only compare it to the top-tier 7950X and the mid-tier 7600X. The majority of the specifications have stayed constant, with the exception of the clock speeds, which have been decreased from 4.7 GHz to 3.6 GHz for the base clock and from 5.6 GHz to 5.4 GHz for the turbo clock. International pricing is USD 429, which comes out to around INR 42,000 after taxes, although we haven’t received official confirmation from AMD on this.

The GPU configuration, like the core configuration, has remained constant. All Ryzen 7000 CPUs will have inbuilt graphics capabilities, and instead of a really ancient GPU architecture, we’ll receive RDNA 2 IGP Cores in all four processors. The Ryzen 9 7900 additionally has two RDNA 2 cores with base clock speeds of 400 MHz and peak clock speeds of 2200 MHz.
AMD RYZEN 9 7900 PERFORMANCE
We preserved the most of the setup from the prior assessments. The only difference is that the motherboard has been replaced with another review unit.

Cinebench R23
In the single-threaded test, the AMD Ryzen 9 7900 scored 1968 points and 25354 points in the multi-threaded test. The single-threaded result is just lower than the 1997 points obtained by the more powerful 7950X, indicating that this 65W part is already promising. The multithreaded score is significantly lower than that of the 7950X and 13900K.
Blender
The AMD Ryzen 9 7900 performs significantly worse in Blender than the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X and the Intel Core i9-13900K. However, based on the time it takes to finish renders, it’s a good processor for 3D modelling jobs.
AI benchmark
The AMD Ryzen 9 7900 performs quite similarly to the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X in the AI benchmark.
Temperatures
Peak load temperatures of around 86 degrees Celsius were achieved largely in synthetic benchmarks. Peak temperatures for video transcoding and 3D modelling workloads were in the mid-70s.
Memory Latency
The L1 Cache access speeds and latency of the AMD Ryzen 9 7900 and the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X differed noticeably. A similar pattern could be observed with the L2 cache. In the L3 cache tests, the performance gap was less pronounced.
Gaming
In terms of gaming performance, the AMD Ryzen 9 7900 outperforms the Ryzen 5 7600X. It falls behind the Intel Core i5-13600K without PBO or Precision Boost Overdrive, but with PBO enabled, it moves slightly ahead of the 13600K.
7-Zip
The L1 Cache access speeds and latency of the AMD Ryzen 9 7900 and the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X differed noticeably. A similar pattern could be observed with the L2 cache. In the L3 cache tests, the performance gap was less pronounced.
Power consumption
And now for the information that the majority of folks would like to know about a 65W component. The AMD Ryzen 9 7900 consumes roughly 82-92 watts under steady load situations, which is fairly decent when compared to the 7950X, which would easily consume twice that much. We’re discussing video transcoding workloads and synthetic benchmarks like Cinebench R23.
VERDICT
The AMD Ryzen 9 7900 processor is ideal for those looking to build a jack-of-all-trades PC. It excels in gaming, content creation, and daily productivity tasks. The arrival of the new chipsets has reduced the overall platform cost significantly, but we have yet to see an A6XX chipset in the cheap segment, so things remain a touch pricey when compared to the competition. Having said that, the AMD Ryzen 9 7900 is a capable processor. All that remains to be seen is whether Indian pricing allows it to maintain the same value-for-money promise as overseas markets.
